Upwork

By far the best place to start as a freelancer. Free membership, many categories, good number of projects to bid on. Fixed price projects or hourly (paid for hours of work, managed through their own time tracking desktop app). May upload mock ups. Free membership give you enough points to bid and get your first project. Their fees are fairly acceptable after a recent update.

If you are new, Upwork may be the best place to start freelancing.

Freelancer

The largest freelance marketplace. Free membership. Can bid on fixed projects, hourly projects (has its own time tracker) or contests. Can provide mock ups only on contests. Less amount of bids as a free member. Several upgrade plans.

Very crowded and hard to win a project now days. Will need to upgrade for more chance to get a project.

Fiverr

A place to sell tour services (gigs) by posting gig for every service/work you offer. Promote your gigs to acquire work and get commissions.

The gig economy actually works if find a non saturated niche and offer a unique service. Don’t forget to promote your gigs.

Clickworker

The biggest place for micro jobs. Various tasks are posted including web search, image categorization, tagging, adding descriptions to products and similar tasks. While tasks don’t need much time, payment per task is quite low but much higher then other similar sites.

Guru

One of the best classic freelance sites. Free membership gives you a decent number of bids per year, and paid upgrades are also available for more options.

PeoplePerHour

Hourly and project-based projects here. As a freelancer their artificial intelligence system matches you to the most suitable projects based on your profile and abilities. You can search for projects manually also. 15 proposals per month for free.
